We help kids (and parents) feel at ease at the dentist

It’s completely normal for children to feel nervous about visiting the dentist, especially if they’ve had a tough experience before or are facing a more involved procedure. At Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry, we’re experts at helping kids feel safe, heard, and supported every step of the way.

Our approach combines kid-friendly communication, a calm environment, and options for dental sedation when needed. Whether your child is a little uneasy or experiencing something more serious, our Charlottesville dental anxiety dentist will work together to make their visit a positive one.

Nitrous oxide for mild dental anxiety

For children with mild anxiety, we offer nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) during routine treatments and cleanings.

This safe, fast-acting sedation helps your child feel relaxed but awake, with minimal side effects. It wears off quickly and allows most kids to return to their normal activities shortly after the appointment.

Nitrous oxide is ideal for:

  • Mild fear or nervousness
  • Long or unfamiliar treatments
  • Children with strong gag reflexes or sensory sensitivity

Your child’s comfort is our top priority

Every child experiences dental visits differently, and we believe every child deserves care that meets them where they are. Whether your little one needs a little extra encouragement, some calming gas, or a full sedation solution, we’re here with compassion and expertise.

If your child is nervous about seeing the dentist, let’s talk. Our Charlottesville dental anxiety dentist will take the time to understand their needs, ease their fears, and create a plan that keeps them smiling.

We had a wonderful experience here. I was pleasantly surprised by how efficient and friendly everyone was. Great communication all around and we will definitely be back. Thank you for giving my son such a positive experience.

Advanced sedation options

For children who need more than nitrous oxide to feel comfortable, we offer advanced sedation. After an evaluation at Piedmont Pediatric Dentistry, we’ll help guide you through scheduling and the next steps.

Oral Sedation

A mild-to-moderate option given by mouth to help children stay calm but awake.

IV Sedation

Delivered directly into the bloodstream for deeper relaxation without full unconsciousness.

General Anesthesia

Used for young or highly anxious children who need to be fully asleep during treatment.

Dental anxiety in kids FAQs

Is dental sedation safe for children?

Yes. All sedation types we use are safe and administered by trained professionals with extensive experience in pediatric care.

Will my child be unconscious with nitrous oxide?

No. Nitrous oxide helps children feel calm but awake and aware. It’s very mild and wears off quickly after treatment.

What’s the difference between oral sedation and IV sedation?

Oral sedation is taken by mouth and creates moderate relaxation. IV sedation offers a deeper level of calm and is delivered directly into the bloodstream for faster, stronger effects.

How do I know which sedation option is right for my child?

Our Charlottesville dental anxiety dentist will help you decide based on your child’s age, health, level of anxiety, and the type of dental treatment needed.

Most Insurance Plans Accepted

We accept most insurance plans and will help you understand the extent of your coverage.
