Preparing for your child’s first visit
Your time is valuable. We want to respect your time and make your child’s dental appointment as smooth and efficient as possible. When you come to our office for your child’s first visit, we ask that you bring the following items:
- A photo ID – either a valid driver’s license or state ID are acceptable
- A copy of your child’s birth certificate
- Custody order, if applicable
- Insurance information or card
- Any information regarding your child’s oral health, including observations or anything they’ve been complaining about
- Any and all questions you have about your child’s oral health or the dental care we offer
We take your child’s health and security very seriously. For that reason, we ask to have a copy of the child’s birth certificate or custody order, when appropriate, on file. This helps us to know that we are getting consent for dental treatment from the proper adult. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in providing the highest standard of care.
If it is developmentally appropriate, you can inform them of your child of the upcoming dental visit and let them know that we’ll explain every procedure and answer all of their questions. There are lots of books and online resources available regarding a child’s first dental visit that you can refer to while preparing your child for their first dental appointment.
What to expect at the first appointment
We know your child’s first visit to the dentist can be scary. Don’t dismay! Regular appointments and familiarity should help to alleviate any dental anxiety your child is experiencing. We’re here to make the experience go as comfortable as possible.
For the first dental visit you are welcome to accompany your child. For returning appointments, if your child has started kindergarten (around 5-6 years old), we’ll examine and treat your child as you wait in our waiting room. We’ll then meet with you to discuss your child’s health, any recommended treatments, and oral health at-home strategies that might help your child.
For younger children, a parent is permitted to accompany their child as they are treated.
Typical treatments provided at your child’s first appointment with us:
- Comprehensive oral exam
- Radiographs, as indicated
- Professional dental cleaning
- Fluoride treatment, if preferred
- Anticipatory guidance for proper oral health at-home care and nutrition

Dr. Peters was able to see us quickly to resolve two abscessed teeth. Even though it was a busy afternoon for him, he took time to connect with us and was very personable. I liked that he was decisive in his treatment plan for my daughter.
